Anisotropic Diffusion: From the Apparent Diffusion Coeffi cient to the Apparent Diffusion Tensor

چکیده
As we have seen in previous chapters (Chapter 4 by Callaghan, and Chapter 5 by Le Bihan), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is the gold standard for measuring the diffusivity of water and other spin-labeled species. It is the least perturbing measurement imaginable, providing extremely accurate and precise data. We have also learned that the subsequent combination of the Stejskal and Tanner pulsed-fi eld gradient (PFG) NMR sequence with an MRI sequence allows diffusion measurements to be performed on a voxel-by-voxel basis. MRI measurement of water diffusivity in soft tissue provides unique useful biological and clinical information about tissue composition, the physical properties of tissue constituents, tissue microstructure, and its architectural organization. Moreover, this information can be obtained in vivo, noninvasively without the Summary Box

Apparent diffusion coefficients from high angular resolution diffusion imaging: estimation and applications.
High angular resolution diffusion imaging has recently been of great interest in characterizing non-Gaussian diffusion processes. One important goal is to obtain more accurate fits of the apparent diffusion processes in these non-Gaussian regions, thus overcoming the limitations of classical diffusion tensor imaging. This paper presents an extensive study of high-order models for apparent diffu...
متن کاملExploring the Possibility of Estimating Degree of Glioma Tumors by Measuring Apparent Diffusion Coefficient
Introduction: Most common glioma tumors are tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) which are the cause of about 40 to 50 percent of brain tumors. This type of cancer includes 2 to 3 percent of cancers in the world. Conventional MRI is powerless in the detection and differentiation of benign and malignant tumors. In this case, diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) can create cont...
متن کاملEvaluation of Soft Tissue Sarcoma Tumors Electrical Conductivity Anisotropy Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging for Numerical Modeling on Electroporation
Introduction: There is many ways to assessing the electrical conductivity anisotropyof a tumor. Applying the values of tissue electrical conductivity anisotropyis crucial in numerical modeling of the electric and thermal field distribution in electroporationtreatments. This study aims to calculate the tissues electrical conductivityanisotropy in patients with sarcoma tumors using diffusion tens...
متن کاملInvestigation of apparent diffusion coefficient and diffusion tensor anisotrophy in acute and chronic multiple sclerosis lesions.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The various stages of multiple sclerosis (MS) are characterized by de- and remyelination as well as by inflammation. Diffusion MR imaging is sensitive to tissue water motion, which might correspond to these pathologic processes. Our purpose was to demonstrate differences in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and diffusion tensor anisotropy in acute and chronic MS plaque...
متن کاملEffective diffusion tensor computed by homogenization
Introduction Diffusion MRI can give useful information on cellular structure and structural change (for a review see [1]). We show that the effective diffusion tensor obtained by mathematical homogenization theory (see e.g. [2,3]) is a good approximation to the long time apparent diffusion tensor under realistic DMR scanning conditions for both isotropic and anisotropic diffusion and general ge...
